Acts of piracy now attracts a maximum jail term of 3 years and a penalty of 5% of the cost of producing the film. India produces 2000 films annually in more than 20 languages. Film makers and private players invest their time and money in making a film. From actors to makeup artists, from stunts to scripts, the expectations of vested parties are high. The industry looses $2.6 billion every year due to piracy. Film Industry can now take a breather with the new amendment of the Cinematograph (Amendment) Bill, 2023. Instances of movies being circulated earlier than its release dates are common and punishments are few and far in between. The Amendment attempts to have a harsher punishment on those who take part in acts of piracy. The Bill defines acts of Piracy as 1) Unauthorized recording 2)Unauthorized Exhibition of films. The Bill Provision Includes 1) Three more age based certifications
i.e. UA 7+,UA 13+,and UA 16+. 2)To change the validity of film certificate from 10 years to perpetuity.
3)The punishment of jail term up to 3 years to offenders.
4)The penalty of 5% of film production cost to the offenders.
